Kashim Shettima Rejects His Newly Renovated Official Residence in the Presidential Villa

The Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of installing surveillance devices in his newly built official residence, worth ?21 billion. He prefers to remain in his current residence.

Eight months after its commissioning, Vice President Shettima has refused to move into the newly built federal government residence, alleging that surveillance devices or other monitoring technologies have been installed in the ?21 billion mansion to track his activities.

A close associate of the Vice President revealed that, due to the opposition of some Northern Nigerian leaders to President Tinubu's second-term bid in 2027, Shettima is aware that his actions are being closely monitored by Tinubu and his allies.

There are also rumors that Shettima may be replaced by Yakubu Dogara in 2027, which makes him see moving into the new official residence as a waste of time.

According to the source, Shettima believes that relocating to the new residence would give Tinubu's administration more access to monitor his movements, track visitors, and listen in on discussions taking place there.

In June 2023, one month after President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima were sworn in, the government commissioned the new ?21 billion residence for the Vice President. FCT Minister Nyesom Wike stated that the project was initially started in 2010 at a cost of ?7 billion, but construction was halted before completion.

On June 7, 2024, President Tinubu officially inaugurated the Vice President’s new residence, stating that providing a suitable home for the Vice President was not just a matter of comfort but also a sign of respect for the office and its occupant.
